LinkedIn’s New AI Data Setting: What You Need to Know and How to Turn It Off in 3 Minutes

Helping professionals worldwide to communicate clearly and confidently.

1 | What happened

In early October 2025, LinkedIn added a new privacy setting. This setting lets it use your profile data to teach its artificial intelligence (AI) models.

  • The setting is turned ON by default.

  • It affects every LinkedIn user around the world.

  • The data to be used includes anything on your profile that’s set to “public”, including your name, photo, current and past positions, education, posts, articles, polls, publications, job application details and resumes, among (many) other types of information.

LinkedIn says this helps make better AI tools, but many users are still not aware of this major new development.

2 | Why this matters

This isn’t about panic, it’s about knowing what’s happening with your information and being able to control it.

If you’re a business leader, consultant, or any professional whose profile shows important work details, you should know how your information gets used.

Opting out won’t hurt your profile. People can still find you in searches, and it won’t affect your job opportunities. It simply removes your data from the information used to train AI.

3 | How to check and turn it off (if you want to)

  1. Log in to LinkedIn on a computer or phone browser.

  2. To find your account settings, click Me (or on your photo!) ▸ Settings & Privacy.

  1. On the left side, click Data Privacy.

Step 2 screenshot of linked settings page with Data Privacy circled

  1. Scroll down to How LinkedIn uses your data → click on Data for generative AI Improvement

Step 3 screenshot of LinkedIn settings page with Data for Gen AI ON circled

  1. Notice the toggle is switched ON by default.

  1. Switch the toggle to Off.

  2. Close the window. Your choice saves automatically.

That’s it. You’re all set!

4 | Make sure it worked

Go back to the same page to check that the toggle is still OFF.

If you have multiple accounts or company pages, do this for each one.

And that’s it! You’re done!

5 | Would you prefer to keep it on?

Not everyone wants to remove their data from AI training use. It’s a personal decision.

However, you can leave the toggle on and still protect important information:

  • Check which parts of your profile are public.

  • Delete or change information you don’t want shared anywhere.

  • Keep your job title and “About” section current so any AI system shows your best, most up-to-date information.

Great that you are proactive and thinking ahead!

6 | The bigger picture

The difference between “public” and “used to train AI” is getting harder to see on every website.

This update reminds us that our professional profiles are now more and more frequently part of larger AI systems.

The smart move isn’t to hide; it’s communicating clearly, and knowing what to say, what to show, and when to make changes.

7 | Share this with your network!

Most professionals still have this setting turned on by default.

Send this post or share it on LinkedIn to help others stay informed.
